Overview

The aim of this unit is to introduce students to educational programs and practices relevant for early childhood education and care. Students will develop understanding and knowledge of how to plan for, implement and assess infants’ and children’s learning and development. This unit will enable students to gain an excellent foundation in early childhood programs and practices which will underpin and inform their future learning in the course. Students will engage in learning highly relevant to their future practice as early childhood teachers, specifically in the areas of the curriculum frameworks, routine, observation of children’s learning and development, program planning, curriculum development and documentation.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Reflect on the image of the child, and the purpose of planning for sustained shared thinking and collaborative learning in early childhood education;
  2. Interpret and analyse information from different sources for the purpose of curriculum development;
  3. Design, implement and evaluate learning experiences in accordance with the planning cycle informed by the frameworks.
