Overview

The unit will introduce the student to the basic concepts of cosmetic chemistry. Particular emphasis will be placed on increasing student knowledge of cosmetic formulations in preparation for later dermal clinical skills units. Students will learn about the various components of cosmetic formulations and the role of each in these products. By becoming familiar with types of ingredients, their properties and mechanisms of action, students will be better able to make decisions about the products they use and recommend in clinical settings.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Investigate the basic principles of organic chemistry relevant to dermal science;
  2. Utilise knowledge of chemistry to conceptualise the form and function of cosmetic formulations;
  3. Analyse and critique the properties of cosmetic formulations in order to devise skin care strategies in dermal practice;
  4. Determine factors involved in skin penetration and assess methods of influencing this in dermal practice; and
  5. Locate issues of chemical safety and assess strategies for the safe management of chemicals used in dermal practice.
