Overview

This unit provides students with practical experience in an osteopathic setting and work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences. Students consult with members of the public under the supervision of AHPRA registered health care providers in both onsite and offsite clinics, including external partnerships. The clinical placement hours within this unit develop students’ capabilities for osteopathic practice, capacity for teamwork, collaboration with peers & supervisors and communication with patients. This unit will foster the development of confidence, maturity and necessary skills to enter the workforce as a practicing osteopath.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse, reflect on and synthesise complex clinical information to inform decision-making;
  2. Exhibit safe and appropriate person-centered assessment (medical and musculoskeletal) for diverse patient demographics across the lifespan;
  3. Justify and implement appropriate biopsychosocial management plans that are evidence-informed and comply with regulatory frameworks; and
  4. Exemplify person-centred communication skills and the ability to adapt to diverse patient demographics.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

The mini clinical examination (mini CEx) and Report of Findings (ROF) are assessments conducted in the clinical setting under the supervision of a clinical educator and evaluate the student’s ability to communicate with patients, gather a patient history and perform clinical examinations. During these patient interactions, the student is assessed on various aspects of their clinical skills and communication abilities. In the portfolio task, students will demonstrate and reflect on their ability to meet the Capabilities for Osteopathic Practice. Finally, the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) evaluates the clinical capabilities and skills necessary for osteopathic practice.
