Overview

Gain expertise in professional training and development in the HR context, with the Human Resource Development unit.

In this unit, you will come to understand the theory and practical skills required to manage and deliver successful Learning and Development (L&D) activities in both small and large organisations.

Examining HR development in organisations, you will consider the latest trends in:

  • training and development
  • career progression
  • organisational development.

You will explore, in detail, the employment and career progression cycle within an organisation. This will include critiquing ‘Training Needs Analysis’ used in complex industries, and a variety of design and evaluation methods applied in the practice of HR development.

Your learning will be interactive, with peer learning and collaborations, and personal reflections on career paths.


You will examine case studies and discuss the impact of current issues such as:

  • globalisation on employment
  • workforce demographics
  • skill shortages
  • environmental matters.

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate an in-depth understanding of an organisation’s employment cycle
  • evaluate the effectiveness of HR development practices and processes
  • recommend HR development improvements to senior management.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the administrative and strategic value of Human Resource Development (HRD) as relevant to local and global organisations;
  2. Investigate and review issues relating to the use of HRD in contemporary business settings;
  3. Devise and propose people systems (Training Needs Analysis and training journey) solutions, related to the effective management of human resource information; and,
  4. Exhibit, individually and/or in team scenarios, effective communication skills to develop and present HRD and people systems recommendations with integrity and judgement.
