Overview

The purpose of this unit is to provide students with an overview of the built environment discipline, highlighting fundamental principles of design and digital proficiency. The unit provides students with an understanding of occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations, organisational policies and procedures, as well as the ability to master industry-standard computer-aided design software. By incorporating culturally diverse knowledge systems, the unit broadens students' perspectives on spatial design and communication, fostering a more inclusive and socially aware approach to the field. This inclusion enriches the curriculum by exposing students to different cultural perspectives and approaches, which can deepen their understanding of design principles and enhance their ability to communicate and think about space in more holistic and inclusive ways. The unit also equips students with core architectural concepts and digital skills, laying a solid groundwork for their continued education and future professional practice in architecture. This unit incorporates Work Integrated Learning (WIL). Students will have an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and skills in professional practice activities such as design projects.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Evaluate and integrate fundamental architectural design principles in the creation of spatial environments;
  2. Comply with OHS regulations relevant to architectural practice and workplace environments;
  3. Implement organisational policies and adhere to quality assurance standards in architectural projects, ensuring that designs are culturally informed and actively promote diverse cultures and traditions;
  4. Employ suitable techniques for effectively documenting and communicating architectural designs; and
  5. Produce two and three-dimensional drawings for architectural designs.
