Overview

This unit builds upon the concepts introduced in Measurement and Estimating, offering a deeper exploration of measurement techniques and styles. It covers topics such as description composition, the measurement of various defined building elements and associated site works, the use of computer measurement software, and the Australian Standard Method of Measurement of Building Work (ASMM). The unit also includes an examination of simplified measurement methods, core estimating principles, the preparation of bills of quantities, and the pricing of builders' preliminaries, overheads, and supervision. The primary goal of this unit is to provide students with practical experience in the tendering process used by construction professionals. To achieve this, students will engage in a team research project aimed at identifying the optimal parameters for estimating civil and building infrastructure projects.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret accepted drawing conventions and formats and building documentation involving architectural, structural and service drawings and contour mapping to apply shortened/simple form methods;
  2. Apply building principles and methods to a range of civil/building infrastructure construction elements and associated siteworks including bulk excavations and site preparation works;
  3. Quantify moderately complex architectural and engineering structures using basic measurement techniques and effectively communicate items that have been measured to a range of specialist and non-specialist stakeholders;
  4. Create estimating documentation to the level of a novice professional for a moderately complex building project in collaboration with team members; and
  5. Develop and assess tender documentation demonstrating professional judgment.
