Overview

In this unit of study, the Australian legal system, the regulatory framework surrounding the construction industry, the National Construction Code (NCC) and associated legislation are elucidated in the context of the building construction industry. The unit aims to analyse and interpret statutory controls and assessment; enforcement proceedings; how occupational health and safety, environmental and heritage legislation interact with the Building Legislation; and the application of the principles of performance-based legislations.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret and apply federal, state and local building regulations, codes and standards in building design and development;
  2. Analyse and determine compliance requirements for design and development of buildings of any size and complexity;
  3. Critically review building regulatory procedures, codes and standards to present graphical and written designs and specifications details for different development scenarios;
  4. Formulate sound and safe practices in relation to permits and inspections on site; and
  5. Exemplify effective and relevant interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively within the workplace and with the general public.
