Overview

This unit will provide students with instruction and practice in culturally appropriate communication with patients. Emphasis will be placed upon creating a rapport through engendering trust and shared decision making through verbal and non-verbal communication. Integral to this is explaining diagnoses and management care in clear and explicit lay language. At a macro level, students will be taught how to structure a cohesive medical consultation while being flexible through practising active listening and responding to patient concerns and queries.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate awareness of patient-centred care though culturally appropriate verbal communication skills through OSCE role-plays when interacting with patients;
  2. Demonstrate awareness of patient-centred care though culturally appropriate non-verbal communication skills through OSCE role-plays when interacting with patients; and
  3. Show an ability to structure an 8-minute OSCE through chunking/sectioning of sub-topics (e.g. history-taking then explanation of diagnosis) while creating cohesion between sections.
