Overview

Patient and Health System 1 extend students' knowledge of the Australian healthcare system, with an emphasis on the health professional services available to patients. Students consider determinants of health, building on students' developing knowledge of health, illness and disease affecting the Australian public. Health enhancing and risk behaviours are related to common diseases and students will reflect on the role of various health professions in delivering healthcare to patients and patients’ adherence to and acceptance of therapeutic management. Students explore the impact of psychosocial factors on health status and health behaviours.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Reflect on the position of Osteopathy in the broader health system;
  2. Relate the health enhancing and health risk behaviours to common diseases in Australia;
  3. Review the current approaches to health education, health promotion and disease prevention;
  4. Reflect on psychological, social and environmental factors impacting health & well-being; and
  5. Identify outcome measures used for patient assessment in Osteopathic practice.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

The two quizzes assess foundational knowledge of assessing the physical, environmental, social and psychological risks as observed in a video of a simulated patient. Students develop a project to examine the Australian health system and apply knowledge of health promotion and educational strategies for disease prevention. Finally, students are assessed in a group presentation where they identify and discuss outcome measures used to identify health risks and behaviours in patients.
