Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce and assemble solid timber components using angled and curved construction methods. Products may be custom-made or mass-manufactured and could include curved counters, desks, seating, cabinetry and end panels.Workers with this competency follow established procedures using discretion, judgement and problem solving to determine construction methods based on design documentation provided to them.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • produce at least 4 curved components using solid timber, collectively including:
  • one kerfing method
  • one machine curved method
  • one laminated curve method
  • produce at least 2 angled components using solid timber, collectively including:
  • one bevel join
  • one flat panel angled component.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
