Overview

Professional Practice in Sport Science is the second capstone unit for the Bachelor of Sport Science. In this unit students learn about working in a multi-disciplinary sports settings and the challenges faced by athletes and coaches to perform at their best. This unit provides an opportunity for students to integrate and apply their knowledge and skills acquired through their course to transition into careers in sport science.

On the completion of this unit students will have an understanding of the complexities of working in a dynamic sport environment. Students will synthesise knowledge from the biological and social sciences and apply critical thinking, ethical considerations, and professional skills to address complex real-world challenges in sport through case studies and problem-based learning activities. Students will also learn firsthand from leading sport science professionals during field trips to high-performance sport organisations in Melbourne.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Adapt skills and knowledge to anticipate and creatively solve problems related to professional practice in sport science;
  2. Appraise and conceptualise the ethical implications of professional practice in sport science and associated industry sectors;
  3. Derive ethical positions and coherently justify that position in relation to personal goals in work and learning; and,
  4. Determine and evaluate the complexities of working in multi-disciplinary sport science teams to make decisions and solve problems.
