Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use specialised equipment in the provision of resuscitation and oxygen therapy in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.This unit applies to persons who may be required to use specialised equipment to provide resuscitation or oxygen therapy in a range of complex situations, including community and workplace settings.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, incl the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
managed, in line with ARC guidelines, the unconscious, breathing casualty including appropriate positioning to reduce the risk of airway compromise & non-breathing adult incl:

  • performing at least 2 minutes of the following on an adult resuscitation manikin placed
  • uninterrupted CPR on the floor
  • bag-valve-mask ventilation & compression during a two-rescuer procedure on the floor
    *selecting & inserting an appropriate basic airway adjunct
    *responding appropriately using positioning & suctioning in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
    *demonstrating a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
    *following the prompts of an AED to deliver at least one shock
    *managing oxygen equipment
    *handing over to emergency services
    *managed unconscious, non-breathing infant, incl:
  • performing at least 2 minutes uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface
    *managed a casualty with life-threatening bleeding requiring use of tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
    *used PPE
    *managed a conscious casualty who requires supplemental oxygen
    *monitored and coordinated maintenance of resuscitation equipment & oxygen therapy equipment

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
