Overview

This unit introduces students to social research in youth and community-focused settings. Students will engage in and articulate practices in professional and bureaucratic contexts. They will develop skills in: preparing literature reviews; planning for change; setting goals and outcomes; developing frameworks and tools, collecting, interpretating and analysis data in social research and planning, writing and presenting to professional audiences. The unit encourages collaborative work, while also helping students become reflective and analytical practitioners.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate the importance of being a reflective practitioner within a local and global community;
  2. Design and apply evaluation tools for a range of programs and community research;
  3. Critically review a range of research tools and implement with an understanding of ethical, legal, and financial considerations, and how they impact individuals and the community;
  4. Review examples of research proposals and reports that contribute to work and community networks; and
  5. Evaluate and analyse relevant literature that is useful to and identifies good practice; in youth work, community and professional practice debates.
