Overview

In this unit students will develop deep mathematics pedagogical content knowledge and a strong understanding of the importance of research-based enquiry to inform teaching and learning. Students will develop their understanding of the key ideas, skills and strategies that are used in the middle years. Alongside developing a positive and confident mindset towards teaching Mathematics students will become familiar with evidence-based principles that underpin the middle years curriculum. Students will experience administrating and analysing assessment and reporting tools from where they will learn about strategies to support differentiated teaching and learning.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the key strategies, skills and concepts involved in teaching and learning mathematics in the middle years.
  2. Plan, implement, and evaluate effective mathematics learning situations to address a range of learning needs, promote the negotiation of meaning and support the development of students’ problem solving and thinking skills across the curriculum.
  3. Draw on the Victorian Curriculum and key mathematical research to further develop their knowledge and confidence for teaching mathematics.
  4. Plan effective learning sequences, select and implement appropriate teaching materials and tasks, in addition to making connections to other curriculum areas.
  5. Observe and analyse students’ mathematical abilities and use assessment tools to respond to students needs by differentiating teaching and learning.
