Unisport Indigenous Nationals
Victoria University students and staff will take part in the Indigenous Nationals, a week-long multi-sport competition.
The National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games began in 1996 as a joint class project of 13 students enrolled in a Diploma of Aboriginal Studies at the University of Newcastle.
Twelve years later, those student games have grown into the Indigenous Nationals, this year hosted by Monash University.
The event provides an opportunity for more than 500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from over 30 universities to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture, promote unity, health, fitness and wellbeing, demonstrate self determination, build new connections and friendships, network and reinforcing identity through positive role models.
Victoria University will join Deakin University to form a team to compete at the Indigenous Nationals, with great support from Moondani Balluk – Indigenous Academic Unit at VU and VU Sport.
Seven students and two VU staff members will represent VU at this significant sporting and cultural event, all in a fun and culturally-safe environment.
The Indigenous Nationals are the only event in the Australian University Sport calendar where mixed-gender teams compete in four different sports: basketball, netball, touch football and volleyball. Participants represent VU while demonstrating their skills in any of the sports.
