Flexible study, one subject at a time
Our unique April intake is possible thanks to the VU Block Model®. It means studying one subject at a time, in collaborative classes instead of big lectures.
You can focus on one subject at a time, every four weeks. You’ll also have more flexibility to balance work, study and life – it has a huge impact on their student experience.
But why take it from us? Hear it straight from one of our students.
Switching unis: Why Rawan moved to VU
For Rawan Badawi, switching to VU opened up new way of studying while putting her on the path to her dream career as a lawyer. Before coming to VU, she studied international relations at another university.
“My goal was always to transfer to law after a year, but studying four subjects at the same time was stressful.”
She discovered that VU’s Bachelor of Laws runs from the VU City Tower in the heart of Melbourne’s legal district. This meant Rawan could reduce her commute. She also loved the idea of the VU Block Model, where she could focus on one subject at a time, every four weeks.
“With the VU Block Model, I could put all my attention on one subject without feeling like I’m neglecting others or dealing with all my exams and assessments happening at the same time. It helped me to stay focused.”
Practical experience that opens doors
A focus on practical learning and industry experience also meant more opportunities for Rawan after she graduated. This included a 150-hour placement at WEstjustice, a Community Legal Centre (CLC) in Sunshine.
“My legal placement was incredibly informative and prepared me for working in the criminal justice system. I had the chance to sit in on client meetings, court hearings and conferences between Defence and Prosecution.
I really believe my time at WEstjustice made a huge difference in preparing me for court appearances and advocacy, as well as dealing with the vast and complex nature of the clients we work with on a day-to-day basis.
Having a legal placement at a CLC also gave me an edge when I started interviewing for Graduate Lawyer positions. I was worried that since I hadn’t completed a clerkship or an associateship, I would find it difficult to get a job, but the CLC jobs I was applying for valued my placement experience.”
Hands-on learning and opportunities to shape your career path
VU’s practical approach to learning helped Rawan build confidence and discover what kind of law career she wanted to build.
“Hands-on learning meant I could connect the information I was taught to real life practice, which helped me to understand the topics I was being taught rather than just trying to absorb endless facts thrown at me.
When I first arrived at VU, I didn’t know what area of law I wanted to work in. The VU Block Model gave me the focus and time to decide that my ideal goal was to work in criminal law and at a Community Legal Centre or government organisation so I could help vulnerable communities who needed ongoing support.”
After completing her Bachelor of Laws, Rawan did her Practical Legal Training (PLT) and was admitted as a legal practitioner in 2022. After working at the Law and Advocacy Centre for Women for close to 2 years, Rawan is now a lawyer at Victoria Legal Aid.
Victoria Legal Aid provides free legal information and education to all Victorians, with a focus on prevention and early resolution of legal problems. Rawan’s role her means she’s achieved dream career of providing legal services to vulnerable communities.
