Overview

Prepare for a career as a secondary school teacher through intensive study and real work experience, with the Master of Applied Teaching (Secondary Education) at Victoria University.

This masters degree is open to students from groups that are underrepresented in the teaching profession*. A scholarship and paid teaching internship will be offered to all successful applicants.

The postgraduate teaching degree offers an employment-based, fast-tracked teacher-education program. It prepares you to register as a teacher your specialisation area(s), and focuses on hands-on learning in schools.

The 18-month program is made up of three intensive phases of placements and classes, including online classes from 9am to 4pm on Mondays throughout (see course structure below).

In the first phase, you'll learn from expert teachers at Victoria University, who will introduce the principles of good teaching practice and equip you with the knowledge and skills to enter your first school placement. The final two phases are work-based, letting you hone your craft in secondary schools, with additional study to support your practical learning.

*To be eligible you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background, as defined below, or Indigenous background. Students who are not eligible see our Master of Education (Secondary Teaching).

Entry requirements

When assessing your application, we consider your education, work experience, current skills and personal attributes (where relevant).

Applicants for this course will need to meet the entry criteria outlined below. If you don’t meet the entry criteria, you may be able to gain entry by first completing a different course. We call this a ‘pathway’.

For PhD applicants, we offer a related ‘Integrated PhD’ which allows you to establish relevant skills before beginning your research.

You may also be eligible for course ‘credits’, where you are granted a unit or units towards your qualification for equivalent previous study or work experience, so you can graduate sooner.

Course structure

To attain the Master of Teaching (Secondary Education) students will be required to complete 192 credit points in total consisting of:

  • 168 Credit points of Core studies;

  • 24 credit points of Capstone Studies;
  • EED7108: Capstone Research Investigation and EED7004 Engaging the Profession can only be taken towards the end of the course.

Students are required to pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) in order to be eligible to graduate from their Victorian Institute of Teaching-accredited program. There is a course imperative that all students sign up for and undertake the first LANTITE window, and will have VU support with this. This is to enable them to progress through the course and be prepared for their PTT phase.

Classes & placements

Classes are delivered online in real time, which means you will need to attend online classes at set times. Throughout the course you will have an online class from 9am to 4pm on Mondays.

Placements are in-person at a school.

The 18-month program is made up of three intensive phases of six months each:

  • Phase 1:
    You will complete 5 units (subjects) and a 20-day unpaid school placement.
  • Phase 2:
    You will undertake paid work in a school setting at 0.6 (3 days per week) as an ES (Education Support) staff in addition to your Monday classes.
  • Phase 3
    You will undertake paid Paraprofessional work under a Permission to Teach registration (PTT) in a school setting at a 0.8 full-time equivalent (0.6 teaching load + 0.2 paid study leave). This is in addition to your Monday classes.

On days that you are not working in a school setting and during the summer/winter breaks, you will complete more university study.
