A creative approach to law
I chose Victoria University because of its inclusion and diversity. I felt a sense of belonging and was moved by the amount of support I received from lecturers and students in the early days, when I needed it most.

Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts
Bol Mathiang used an arts degree to help him transfer into law at VU. Now, thanks to the support he received during his studies, he’s ready to take the next step towards his goals.
"As someone who had arrived in Australia from South Sudan with little written and spoken English I focused on improving my writing skills through creative writing while studying arts at another institution. I then decided to incorporate this creativity in my studies at VU with the double law/arts degree.
I chose Victoria University because of its inclusion and diversity. I felt a sense of belonging and was moved by the amount of support I received from lecturers and students in the early days, when I needed it most.
During my studies I had the privilege of undertaking a one-month placement at the County Court where I gained a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the court.
My biggest achievements at VU came from the extra-curricular activities where I developed my advocacy skills and gained courtroom experience in several successful mooting competitions. I was part of the team that won the Junior Moot Competition in 2017, and in 2018 I was part of the team that represented VU in an international mediation competition where we won the award for best upcoming team.
I also benefitted from leadership programs such as Lead2Change.
VU has prepared me for the professional world and I am working towards my long term goal of becoming a criminal barrister."
Bol's mooting success
- 2018, ICC Asia Pacific Mediation Competition, Peter McMullin award for best performing new team (with partner Celil Kardaslar)
- 2017, Junior Mooting competition team winners
