Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to establish the foundations of massage practice and its place in the Australian health care system, identify and provide appropriate information about massage to different audiences, develop own approach to massage practice and evaluate what makes a sustainable practice.This unit applies to massage therapists.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • source and summarise three credible pieces of information on the theory and practice of massage including one from each of the following:
  • Commonwealth Government
  • State or Territory Government
  • primary scientific research
  • communicate key messages about massage therapy to meet the information needs of at least three different audiences, each using a different communication method
  • identify and evaluate effective strategies for own practice that cover:
  • personal health
  • sustainable practice
  • career longevity.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • historical development of massage
  • key components of the Australian health care system
  • place of massage practice in the broader health care system
  • types of massage treatments and their key features and purpose including the difference between relaxation and remedial massage
  • key features of complementary therapies used in conjunction with massage
  • key features of allied health services and their relationship to massage
  • types and information needs of massage clients
  • methods of communicating with clients:
  • face-to-face
  • virtual online
  • telephone
  • email
  • social media
  • physical correspondence
  • professional massage networks and industry bodies
  • models of professional massage practice and their career opportunities
  • components of sustainable practice and their impact:
  • economic including opportunities and viability
  • environmental
  • human including personal health and professional development
  • social responsibility
  • Commonwealth and State or Territory legal requirements and ethical considerations and how these are applied in individual practice:
  • children in the workplace
  • codes of conduct
  • continuing professional education
  • discrimination
  • duty of care
  • human rights
  • informed consent
  • insurance requirements
  • mandatory reporting
  • therapist and client boundaries
  • privacy, confidentiality and disclosure
  • records management
  • work role boundaries including responsibilities and limitations
  • work health and safety.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
