Considering switching unis? It’s not as hard as you might think

Maybe uni isn’t turning out like you expected, or you’ve realised you’re not loving your classes. Perhaps you started the year studying law, but realised your passion actually lies in nursing.

Choosing the right university for you can be so important to your study success, how you experience uni life, and the career path you end up on. And, it’s important to remember you don’t have to settle for something that doesn’t make you happy.

It’s never too late to make a change and start something new – and at Victoria University (VU), we love being able to make that a reality for students.

With our multiple intake dates throughout the year and a learning model that lets you study one subject at a time, you can enrol and start studying something brand new at VU at a time that suits you.

Many of our students have switched over from other universities when they felt they needed a change – and just like our Bachelor of Laws student Rawan, they encounter a unique way of studying that can open new doors for them.

The how-to for switching unis

1. Check out key dates & entry requirements

Step one is doing your admin – make sure you’re across key dates for your new course, and any entry requirements (many VU courses don’t require ATAR, but some do).

Make sure you’re aware of the mode of study you’ll be undertaking, and check out the campus your course is based at to get a handle on your commute.

Plus, if you switch unis before the census date, you won’t need to pay any additional fees – so it really does pay to be organised! Just note that the census date differs depending on the institution you’re coming from.

2. Withdraw from your course at your current institution

If you’re a domestic student, this should be a fairly simple process. If you’re an international student, make sure you’re complying with your visa conditions.

It might be wise to chat to someone at your current institution so they can help you with the ins and outs of this – don’t be afraid to ask for support.

3. Apply for your new course

The good news? You can kick off many of our courses at a number of different entry times throughout the year, not just at the start of it.

Get excited, and lead with your dreams first – because they’re easier to achieve than you might think. Under the VU Block Model®, you'll study one subject at a time in four-week blocks, before you progress to the next one.

You’ll be able to really focus and keep your head in the game, and it also means you’ll be starting on the same foot as everyone else in your course – so keeping up with your studies will be a breeze.

Need support through the application process, course advice, or just got general questions about VU? We’re here to help. You can head in to VUHQ on campus, or give us a call – find out how you can contact us.

4. Settle in to VU

You’ll find yourself kickstarting your future with an industry-focused course at VU, that you’ll be able to enjoy – while studying the way that suits you.

At VU you will:

  • study one subject at a time in small, workshop-style classes with the VU Block Model
  • build practical skills as you learn from industry experts
  • gain industry experience through placements and projects with our huge network of partners
  • find a new study home, as you become part of our welcoming and diverse community.
